Music: Three performing groups from San Marcos High School
The Art Squared Arts Market warmly welcomes three highly acclaimed musical groups from San Marcos High School. Listen to Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel and Orquestra Cascabel, a salsa band, both directed by Juan Cavazos, and the San Marcos High School Jazz Ensemble, led by Nathan Rolfe. Enjoy a wide range of music from the talented local student musicians who make up these bands.
Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel will kick off the afternoon’s music at 1:00 p.m. After a 9-year hiatus, the mariachi program was reintroduced in 2016. With new uniforms and full support from San Marcos CISD and the local community; the group has had great success. They recently performed at the UIL State Mariachi Festival and earned a First Division Superior Performance. With than 70 schools competing, only Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel and a few other groups received this highest honor by a panel of professional mariachi musicians and educators. The judges also awarded two Outstanding Performer Awards to Gabe Ortiz and Alicia Cruz for their instrumental and vocal skills.
The San Marcos High School Jazz Ensemble follows at 1:40 p.m. This group is comprised of students who focus on learning the many styles of music associated with jazz. The goal is not just to performing in these styles, but to understand and be able to improvise and solo in the big band setting. Orquesta Cascabel, a salsa band, closes the afternoon’s showcase, starting around 2:20 p.m. Introduced nine years ago, students in the salsa band was study and perform a variety of musical styles from the Caribbean. The Orquestra has accompanied many legendary salsa musicians, including Larry Harlow, Tito Puente Jr., Cita Rodriguez, Pete Rodriguez Jr., and Oscar Hernandez. They have earned numerous awards at the Hill Country Jazz Festival and the Fiesta Jazz Festival. Click here for a link to their recent performance in Kissing Alley.

Coming in May: Aurazora, a talented San Marcos-based band based, featuring the powerful voice of Kelany Brent. They play acoustic rock, blues, swing, and pop, with originals as well as covers from the 70s to today.
